Glenn R. Brown
Biography
Dr.
Glenn Brown was appointed by Governor Voinovich in June of 1996 as
Ohio's first, formally designated Science and Technology Advisor to the
Governor. In 1999, Governor Taft asked him to continue in this role, and
he served as Science Advisor to Gov. Taft until August, 2000. He is
currently President of the Generation Foundation.
Dr. Brown has a BS in Chemical Engineering received from Penn State
University and a PhD in the same discipline received from the Case
Institute of Technology (now the Case Western Reserve University).
He worked for The Standard Oil Co. (now BP) for 33 years, retiring in
1986 as Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer and member of
the Board of Directors. He was responsible for research and development,
engineering, patenting and licensing, health, safety and environmental
affairs, alternate energy and corporate planning. After retirement from
Standard Oil, he spent seven years at Case Western Reserve University.
While with the university, Dr. Brown served as the first Dean of the
combined faculties and as Vice Provost of Corporate Research and
Technology Transfer.
Dr. Brown has served on numerous corporate boards in addition to The
Standard Oil Co. board, including Centran Bank, Society National Bank,
Ferro Corporation and Nordson Corporation. He has also served on many
non-profit boards including the Cleveland Playhouse Square Foundation
(Chair, 1991-1996), The Cleveland Opera, The Botanical Garden of
Cleveland, Hawken School, Cleveland Reads (Chair, 19871993), the
Cleveland Advanced Manufacturing Program, Cleveland Engineering Society,
the American Red Cross, Notre Dame College, United Way Services, the
Northeastern Ohio Science and Engineering Fair, and the American
Chemical Society (Chair, Cleveland Section, 1983).
He has received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from The Pennsylvania
State University (1984), the Distinguished Service Award from the
Cleveland Technical Societies Council (1984), the Leadership Award from
the Cleveland Engineering Society (2000), the People of Vision Award
from Prevent Blindness Ohio (2001), the President's Award for
Distinguished Alumni from The Case School of Engineering, CWRU (2002),
Golden Achievement Award for Education (2002) and an Honorary Doctor of
Science Degree from Kent State University (2000).
